How to Plant a Rose:

1. Decide on its long-term home: First choose whether the rose is going into the ground or into a proper container. Many gift roses arrive in a nursery pot or decorative wrap, but they usually do best once they have a more settled long-term position.

2. Choose a suitably deep pot or a good planting spot: If growing in a container, use a deep pot rather than a shallow decorative one. Patio and miniature roses are among the best types for pots, and the RHS recommends fairly small but deep containers of around 23–35cm for them.

3. Improve the soil or compost: In the ground, enrich the planting area with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In pots, use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, with a little added grit or similar drainage material if needed.

4. Soak the roots or rootball: If the plant is bare-root, soak the roots before planting. If it is container-grown, water the pot well first so the rootball is evenly moist before it goes into its new home.

5. Set it at the right depth: Plant so the rose sits at roughly the same depth it was growing before, with the graft union near soil level. Spread the roots naturally rather than forcing them into a tight bend.

6. Backfill and firm: Fill in around the rootball with the improved soil or compost, then firm gently so the plant is secure without compacting everything into a hard lump. Good contact around the roots helps it settle quickly.

7. Water thoroughly: Give the rose a proper soaking after planting so the soil or compost settles snugly around the roots. This matters just as much in pots as it does in the ground.

Watering & Feeding Roses:

💧 Establishing young plants: Newly planted gift roses need regular, deep watering while they establish, especially if they are planted in spring or grown in a container. Small roses may look self-contained, but they still need their roots to move properly into the surrounding compost or soil before they can fend for themselves.

💧 Once established: Established gift roses in the ground are fairly manageable, but those in pots always need more attention. Container-grown roses should not be allowed to dry out badly, as dry stress makes them more prone to problems such as powdery mildew and generally poorer flowering.

🌱 Feeding routine: Roses are hungry plants, and container roses use up their reserves particularly quickly. The RHS advises top-dressing container roses each spring with a granular rose fertiliser, with additional feeding if needed, and also notes that feeding should stop after August so soft late growth is not damaged by winter cold.

✂️ What to remove: Patio and polyantha roses are pruned on a smaller-scale version of floribunda pruning: first remove the mass of twiggy, unproductive growth, then shorten the main stems by about a third to a healthy bud and remove any over-vigorous shoots that spoil the shape. Miniature roses usually need even less — mostly dead, weak or twiggy growth removed, with the occasional older stem cut lower to encourage fresh vigour from the base.
