The great charm of a gift rose is that it keeps on living and flowering long after the day it was given. Unlike a short‑lived bunch of cut flowers, a rose plant can become part of the garden itself, marking a birthday, anniversary, retirement, new home or simple gesture of affection in a much more lasting way. That is why roses are so often chosen for special occasions: they carry beauty, memory and a sense of continuity all at once.

Common name: Gift rose — not a formal rose class, but a rose chosen and presented as a living gift.
Latin name: Rosa — often a patio, miniature, floribunda or compact bush rose, depending on the variety and occasion.
Size in UK gardens: Most gift roses sold in pots are compact, often around 30–75cm high, though some named occasion roses grow more like fuller bush roses at around 75–90cm or a little more once planted out.
Best position: Full sun is best, ideally with at least four hours of direct light a day, in a reasonably open but not fiercely exposed position.
Soil: Fertile, moisture‑retentive but well‑drained soil; in pots, a loam‑based compost with added grit or similar drainage material works well.
Flowering time: Usually from early summer into autumn, with many compact gift roses repeat‑flowering through summer and early autumn if deadheaded and fed.
Hardiness: Generally fully hardy in most UK gardens once established, though container plants need a little more protection because their roots are more exposed to cold.
Care level: Easy to moderate — straightforward overall, but potted gift roses do need regular watering, feeding and deadheading to stay at their best.
The Simpson’s team raises the majority of our trees here at the nursery. For varieties outside our own production, we work with independent local growers we trust - all chosen for UK climate suitability.
Planting time: Bare-root gift roses are best planted from late autumn to early spring while dormant; container-grown roses can be planted much more widely through the year, provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or extremely dry.
Watering: Water well in the first season, and very regularly if the rose is kept in a pot.
Feeding: Feed in spring with a rose fertiliser, and continue with extra feeding for container plants as needed through the growing season; avoid pushing on soft growth too late in the year.
Pruning: Deadhead through summer and prune in late winter or early spring, with most compact gift roses needing only light to moderate pruning.
Winter: Roses in the ground usually need little extra winter care, but pots may need grouping together or wrapping in colder spells because exposed roots are more vulnerable than those in open soil.
