Patio roses are ideal for gardens where space is limited but you still want the beauty and character of roses. They grow as neat, compact bushes, usually much smaller than floribundas or hybrid teas, so they fit comfortably into pots, window boxes, front gardens and the front of sunny borders. That tidy scale makes them especially useful in modern gardens, where planting areas are often narrow and hard landscaping takes up more room than it once did. In a UK town garden, one or two good patio roses can bring a surprising amount of colour and softness without making the space feel crowded.

Common name: Patio rose.
Latin name: Rosa (Patio Group), usually sold simply as roses with the cultivar name on the label.
Size in UK gardens: Typically 30–60cm high and around 30–50cm wide, depending on variety, pot size, soil and pruning.
Best position: Full sun in an open, bright spot with some shelter from the worst winds; ideal in containers, front gardens, edging beds and small borders.
Soil: Fertile, moisture‑retentive but well‑drained soil enriched with organic matter. In pots, a loam‑based compost is best.
Flowering time: In flushes from June into October, often for many weeks if deadheaded and fed regularly.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in most UK gardens, though container plants are more exposed to winter cold than those in the ground.
Care level: Moderate but straightforward — mainly watering, feeding, deadheading and a light annual prune.
The Simpson’s team raises the majority of our trees here at the nursery. For varieties outside our own production, we work with independent local growers we trust - all chosen for UK climate suitability.
Planting time: Bare‑root patio roses are best planted from late autumn to early spring while dormant; container‑grown plants can be planted through much of the year when conditions are suitable.
Watering: Water regularly in the first season and very consistently in pots, especially in warm spells when compost can dry rapidly.
Feeding: Feed in spring with a rose fertiliser and again after the first flush of flowers, with regular extra feeding for container plants through summer.
Pruning: Deadhead through summer and prune lightly to moderately in late winter or early spring to keep the plant bushy, shapely and floriferous.
Winter: Plants in the ground need little special care in most UK gardens; potted roses benefit from a little extra protection in prolonged hard frosts.
